Some of the e-mails and comments which make me want to continue with this
This is an e-mail from Peter:
I can’t read Spanish, so I didn’t know it had been taken down until I
did a websearch to try and find out what happened. This is terrible really, it was my favourite site for subtitles. (I
have hearing problems.)And there are examples of where your site was NECESSARY.. The tv show
‘The Tudors’.. the DVDs of it available for rent in Canada do NOT
contain subtitles OR captions. So a hard of hearing person like
myself, I have two choices, I can live without the show, or I can
‘commission’ the services of a group of independent
translators–you–to provide me with the dialogue. This is a
testimonial from me of an example where you provided a service that
was NOT AVAILABLE in my country. As far as copyright goes, where relating something you heard with your
ears is concerned, good question. It may be grouped with music. For
example, it is not legal in north america to sing the song ‘happy
birthday to you’ without paying money to the rights owner of the song.
Every single person in north america knows the song, but if they are
caught singing it in public by a freak, they will presumably be
billed. But rights are applicable only to specific regions. Happy birthday to
you is legal to sing in other countries.I am not a lawyer but my gut feeling is that you should completely
disregard all laws except the EEC laws and treaties that Spain is
bound to follow.
And some humour at http://mashable.com/2008/05/20/wikisubtitles/ (Spain says no to wikisubtiles)
It’s very easy to understand.
Spanish people don’t even know what subtitles are; the overdub everything and never learn to hear (and speak) English phonemes properly.Sorry Spanish people. I may love you, but your English stinks (remember «Asereje», by Las Ketchup? Best self-critical song ever!). Start using Wikisubtitles; it’s free and legal!!

Impresionante. Así que si escribo un libro y lo pongo en la red, ¿tengo que PAGAR derechos de autor?
Gracias por tu trabajo, tu dedicación y la pelea.
